Chestnut Class - Archeology workshop
Chestnut Class were lucky to have Mrs Elliot, a desk-based assessment coordinator and historic buildings, give a workshop on how ground is excavated by archaeologists. Using our field and the surrounding area as an example, she explained that the first thing archaeologists do when looking at a site is to undertake research using maps or online information to assess the area. Once they are ready to start excavating, archaeologists first dig a test trench across an identified feature. They remove the top soil and then dig down until they reach the natural layer. Much to the excitement of the children she used a cake to demonstrate the process. Within the cake she demonstrated how different artefacts and graves are documented and labelled. Mrs Elliot showed the class the difference between Christian burials and non-Christian burials including directions and position. All the children expressed their enjoyment of the workshop and displayed a new understanding of archaeology and the process' they use. They all thoroughly enjoyed a slice of the cake at the end of their morning.
